Alice Fraser

Everything’s a matter of time, one way or another. Come see Australian comedian Alice Fraser (The Bugle) turn time inside out and back to front. It’ll be fun! It’s a comedy show! No-one’s going to die, except you know… we’re all going to die.

As heard/seen on The Bugle, BBC Radio 4 and Amazon Prime.

“She could give Daniel Kitson a run for his money…. Fraser can write a cracking joke…” Chortle ★★★★

“Poignant and gut-punchingly funny…a total star in her own right” Herald Sun ★★★★★

“Truly extraordinary… go and see this show” The Scotsman

“A sexy cerebral twist to comedy “ ★★★★★  Out In Perth

The 2019 general election happens. Show rewritten again.

Covid-19 arrives – show rewritten for the third time.

So the 2019/2020 Healing the Nation Tour has become the 2019/2020/2021 Healing the Nation Tour, and as the tour has gone on, there’s been less and less healing and more and more of the opposite. Admittedly, I could have changed the title but it still seemed strangely appropriate – and some of the gigs have been rescheduled so it would prove confusing to existing ticketholders if the ticket said “Healing the Nation” but the show was now called “My Life in Ballet”.

So, we have the serially rewritten Healing the Nation Tour 2019/2020 now extended into 2021, not so much due to popular demand but more lack of open venues. And with negative powers of healing. Yet this latest, very new version of the show is my favourite so far.

CBS: Sister Act

Deloris Van Cartier works in a nightclub for her gangster boyfriend. When she witnesses him murder one of his gang for speaking to the police she goes on the run, and he puts out a ‘hit’ on her. She reports it to the police who hide her in a convent on a witness protection programme.

Immediately she is at logger heads with the Mother Superior who tells her she is to have no contact with the outside world and is to live as a nun, and she appoints Deloris to work with the untuneful choir.

Deloris does what only she knows how to do and that is to teach them to sing as nightclub singers. Mother Superior is horrified; however, the Monsignor is impressed by how many people are reached by Deloris’s approach, and declares her to be a success.

Feeling undermined the Mother Superior does everything she can to get Deloris out of the convent, however, news has spread to the Vatican and a Papal visit is planned for Deloris and the choir to perform.

Deloris gangster boyfriend finds where she is hiding and sends in the ‘boys’ to finish her off, but ‘faith’ intervenes and the convent becomes her salvation.

This is a colourful, musical masterpiece that will leave you rocking in the pews, don’t miss out on this heart-warming, uplifting musical spectacular.

Chess the Musical

Following on from our award-winning production of “Evita”, Durham Musical Theatre Company is proud and privileged to be bringing to Durham the mega-hit musical “Chess”. This show is also written by Tim Rice, but this time with the ABBA musical writing team of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with original orchestrations and arrangements by Anders Eljas.

“Chess” is a heart-rending love story of a woman torn between two men, who happen to be the world’s greatest chess champions, one American and one Russian. Set against the background of the Cold War, the two governments attempt to manipulate an international chess championship for their own political ends. In this love triangle of political intrigue, their personal lives are constantly being influenced by the superpowers, and the heightened passions of these political struggles threaten to destroy both their lives and loves.

“Chess” opened in London in 1986 and as with “Evita”, the show starred Elaine Paige. The score became an instant sensation and includes the hit numbers: “I Know Him So Well”, “One Night in Bangkok”, “Anthem”, “Pity the Child”, “Heaven Help My Heart” and “Someone Else’s Story”.

This will be a rare opportunity to experience in Durham a powerful piece of musical theatre which has consistently received great reviews:

“Chess” is a fine piece of work that shows the dinosaur mega-musical evolving into an intelligent form of life ~ The Sunday Times

“Chess” convincingly proves that the modern musical has come of age ~ The Stage

“Chess” is gift wrapped and gorgeous ~ The Daily Telegraph

“Chess”, from its opening to its anthem of a finale, is a well-written and structured entertainment that is warm, emotional, intelligent and consistently watchable ~ BBC Radio London

Cloudbusting - The Music of Kate Bush

‘If you missed seeing Kate herself, Cloudbusting are the next best thing!’ Simon Mayo, BBC Radio 2

Cloudbusting have been championed by BBC ONE as one of the most authentic tributes in the world. Their passion for Kate’s music has won over sceptical fans everywhere, challenging perceptions of what a tribute band can be and resulting in sell-out performances across the UK.

‘There can only be one Kate Bush’ says vocalist Mandy Watson, who never attempts to mimic Kate on stage. ‘When you sing her music the characters in the songs take over – they are what you become, not Kate. We’re just fans, amazed at this opportunity to perform this music we love so much’

Many of Kate’s original collaborators from stage and studio have been inspired to join the band on stage, including bass player Del Palmer, drummer Preston Heyman and dancer Stewart Avon Arnold, all of whom performed with Kate on her legendary Tour of Life live shows 40 years ago.

Running Up That Hill, Wuthering Heights, Hounds of Love, Babooshka, This Woman’s Work, Wow… Cloudbusting can’t wait to whip up a storm of love for Kate’s music once again in 2020, their new show featuring all the hits you’d expect as well as many songs you wouldn’t! Accompanied by eyepopping visuals that highlight the drama of Kate’s music, a Cloudbusting concert is an event no Kate Bush fan will want to miss.

‘We’re Cloudbusting, daddy!’

‘Utterly, surreally brilliant’ Mick Wall, Classic Rock Magazine

‘I could have been listening to Kate herself!’ Preston Heyman

He has now taken over lead vocals performing all the fantastic Edwin Starr classics, plus dynamic performances of some great Motown & Soul covers. Edwin Starr's original 8-piece band The Team, who backed Edwin on all his shows are still intact, with sax, keyboard, lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion & female backing vocalist. An amazing and energetic show, with an electric atmosphere.

Lorraine Silver is a Northern Soul Legend. She made a record 'Lost Summer Love' when she was only 13 in the mid '60s. This song became iconic at the legendary Wigan Casino in the '70s without her knowing anything about it until 1988.

A Way Home

‘This house isn’t unfit for habitation. We’re inhabiting it. It’s been habitated for 100 years!’

1951 saw a third of County Durham’s villages classified as ‘D’. They were no longer deemed worthy of investment and were expected to die quietly. But they wouldn’t.

A Way Home is a new play rooted in the stories and memories of the very people who called those D villages home. A County-wide fight lasting over 25 years becomes a 12-month journey at Bet’s kitchen table as she confronts what loss really looks like.

With humour, tenderness and not a small amount of grit, A Way Home speaks of fighting to be heard when no one’s listening, telling a story just as significant today as it was 70 years ago.
