Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame
  • 2019
  • US
  • 3h 1min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
  • Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana

Five years after Thanos’s victory, the Avengers are in despair until Ant-Man (Rudd) kicks the story back into action. The final film in the saga verges on fanservice, but there’s intelligent character development, everyone (except Johansson) is given enough to do, and some arcs have a truly poignant sense of closure. Playful, inventive and highly entertaining.

Fisherman's Friends

Fisherman’s Friends
  • 2018
  • UK
  • 1h 52min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Chris Foggin
  • Cast: Tuppence Middleton, James Purefoy, Daniel Mays, David Hayman

Danny (Mays) is a music industry talent handler who arrives in Cornwall on a stag night, and discovers the titular (real-life) folk singers and signs them. Mays is a watchable lead and generates rom-com chemistry with Middleton, the daughter of the group’s grouchy Jim (Purefoy). An undemanding yarn with nevertheless the power to do some cockle-warming.

The Hustle

The Hustle
  • 2019
  • US
  • 1h 34min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Chris Addison
  • Cast: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Dean Norris

Josephine (Hathaway) is a British con artist who hunts for prey in the French Riviera, where she meets Australian grifter Penny (Wilson). This remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is smug, poorly drawn and full of jokes about Wilson’s character’s supposed unattractiveness. Wilson and Hathaway do their best, but it’s not nearly funny enough.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

  • Cast: Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Saïd Taghmaoui, Jerome Flynn, Jason Mantzoukas, Tobias Segal, Boban Marjanović, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane

John Wick (Reeves) is a global exile with a $14m bounty on his head, and is forced to ask snarly assassin Sofia (Berry) for the help she owes him. The third instalment of this action franchise is the best, with spectacular fight sequences, numerous genius details and excellent performances. Violent, hilarious, surprising and cool.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

  • 1h 44min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Rob Letterman
  • Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Ken Watanabe, Bill Nighy

Tim (Smith) is a former Pokémon trainer who teams up with Pikachu (voiced by Reynolds) to solve a mysterious car accident which leaves his detective father presumed dead. Reynolds’ voice skills are incredible, you don’t need to know about the franchise to get what’s going on and it’s a quirky and lovingly crafted surreal comedy thriller.

Red Joan

Red Joan
  • 2018
  • UK
  • 1h 50min
  • Directed by: Trevor Nunn
  • Cast: Judy Dench, Sophie Cookson, Tom Hughes

Joan (Cookson when young, Dench later on) arrives at Cambridge in 1938 and is beguiled by radical politics into becoming a Soviet spy. Nunn’s first movie in over 20 years is a plodding, pedestrian affair, and while Dench captures her befuddlement and steely resolve, it fails to find the drama in a story inspired by intriguing real life events.

Tolkien

Tolkien
  • 2019
  • US
  • 1h 52min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Dome Karukoski
  • Cast: Lily Collins, Nicholas Hoult, Genevieve O'Reilly

Young J.R.R. Tolkien (Gilby, then Hoult) romances Edith Bratt (Keene, then Collins), forms friendships and then fights in the trenches of WWI. Hoult is charismatic as the lead and Collins is charming as Edith, and it’s a convincing enough portrait, but it’s a bit too cosy and traditional, especially the family-friendly combat sequences.
