Amazing Grace (U)

A chance to celebrate the amazing soul diva that was Aretha Franklin. Amazing Grace is a documentary presenting the live recording of Franklin's album Amazing Grace. In 1971, Franklin brought producer Jerry Wexler, her backup singers, and the legendary Atlantic Records rhythm section to The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles to record an album of gospel music before an enthusiastic live audience. The result, “Amazing Grace”, went on to become one of the biggest albums of Aretha Franklin’s career and one of her most beloved works. But even as the album gained fans around the world, few realized that those inspirational sessions had not only been recorded, they had been filmed by a camera crew led by Oscar winning filmmaker Sydney Pollack. Pollack and his team spent two nights capturing Franklin at the height of her powers, as she thrilled a shouting and dancing audience that included Franklin’s father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, gospel legends Clara Ward and Mother Ward of the Ward Family Singers, Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts, and the members of The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church. But due to technical problems the film has never been seen. Until now.

Beats (18)

A universal story of friendship, rebellion and the irresistible power of gathered youth set to an eclectic 1990s rave soundtrack. Set in 1994 Scotland, it’s adapted from Kieran Hurley’s stage play and hinges on the Tory government’s crackdown on rave culture that year. Our heroes are two gawky West Lothian teenagers, techno-head Jonno (Cristian Ortega) and Spanner (Lorn Macdonald). Best friends at school, their paths look set to diverge and when word travels of an upcoming underground protest rave, it seems like an ideal chance for one last hurrah.

Rocketman

Rocketman
  • 2019
  • UK / US
  • 2h 1min
  • Directed by: Dexter Fletcher
  • Cast: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard

This Elton John biopic, exec-produced by its subject, could have been a vanity project, but it’s a fun and cute fantasy musical; Egerton as John as exuberant and sympathetic, and the framing device is sensible. Hardly revelatory, but Fletcher does a good job and sprinkles some inventiveness. Classic songbook helps.
