Despite The Falling Snow

Despite The Falling Snow
  • 2016
  • UK, Canada
  • 93 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Shamim Sarif
  • Written by: Shamim Sarif
  • Cast: Rebecca Ferguson, Charles Dance, Antje Traue

In Moscow 1959, a spy named Katya (Ferguson) romances a young Kremlin bureaucrat (Reid); in Moscow 1992, Katya's niece Lauren (also Ferguson) seeks the truth about her aunt via elderly Alexander (Dance). Humdrum spy-themed romance with lots of long walks in the snow, unhappy reveals and crap dialogue, which never build to the long-promised payoff.

Drama based on the true story of groundbreaking Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan: a poor Indian boy who attended Cambridge University and became a pioneer. This is a worthwhile celebration of the precision and purity of Ramanujan's achievements in number theory, and conveys why his legacy remains so important almost a century after his death.

  • Directed by: Jeff Nichols
  • Written by: Jeff Nichols
  • Cast: Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton

A father goes on the run with his son after he discovers his boy has mysterious powers in this film, which harks back to the grounded 1980s sci-fi of Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter. It's filled with beautiful shots of the Texan dusk, and Shannon is compelling in his role as father Roy. The revelation of what's really going on, though, is lamely conceived and cheaply mounted, and it's hard not to feel cheated.

Intelligent, compelling and moving historical storytelling.
