In this remake of the 1941 film, one-armed circus worker Holt (Farrell) is struggling to reconnect with his bereft children while a certain large-eared pachyderm is figuring out the ropes. It looks lovely, but there’s a lot of extra plot shovelled in and it’s arguably overloaded, compared to the sincerity and simplicity of the original.

  • Cast: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Dean Norris

Josephine (Hathaway) is a British con artist who hunts for prey in the French Riviera, where she meets Australian grifter Penny (Wilson). This remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is smug, poorly drawn and full of jokes about Wilson’s character’s supposed unattractiveness. Wilson and Hathaway do their best, but it’s not nearly funny enough.

  • Cast: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard

This Elton John biopic, exec-produced by its subject, could have been a vanity project, but it’s a fun and cute fantasy musical; Egerton as John as exuberant and sympathetic, and the framing device is sensible. Hardly revelatory, but Fletcher does a good job and sprinkles some inventiveness. Classic songbook helps.

  • Cast: Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, Jóhann Sigurðarson, Juan Camillo Roman Estrada

Halla (Geirharðsdóttir) is a 50-year-old environmental activist who takes on the aluminium industry, but whose ability to campaign is disrupted when her long-gestating adoption application comes through. Erlingsson’s love of the absurd and flair for visual humour is a delight and it’s immensely enjoyable and highly eccentric, with a genuine emotional punch.
