Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed
  • 2016
  • France/US
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Justin Kurzel
  • Cast: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson

Callum Lynch (Fassbender) is a convicted murderer who wakes up in a research facility to find that his ancestor was a 15th century Spanish assassin and he's to travel in time and wage war against the Knights Templar. The set pieces are spectacular but the flip-flopping between past and present messes up the rhythm, and it's all a bit pedestrian.

  • Cast: Douglas Smith, Lucien Laviscount, Cressida Bonas, Jenna Kanell

Elliot (Smith), best friend John (Laviscount) and girlfriend Sasha (Bonas) find themselves haunted by the creepy titular spirit who possesses you if you say his name (whooo). Unoriginal teen horror with some bog-standard CGI and a flimsy gesture towards exploring the psychology of mass murder.

Hacksaw Ridge

  • Directed by: Mel Gibson
  • Cast: Andrew Garfield, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Vince Vaughn

Desmond Doss (Garfield) is a Seventh Day Adventist who enrols in the US Army in WWII and then refuses even to pick up a rifle, let alone shoot one. Doss’s real-life bravery and Garfield’s awkward-everyman persona make this rise above Gibson’s rather clichéd reverence, and the battle sequences are superbly realised.

La La Land

  • 12A
  • Directed by: Damien Chazelle
  • Cast: Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, J.K. Simmons

In Los Angeles, aspiring actress Mia (Stone) falls for jazz musician Sebastian (Gosling). Audaciously inventive homage to classic movie musicals, technically wonderful and joyously emotional, with Gosling as a goofy idealistic charmer and Stone showing the versatility, vulnerability and talent of a young Shirley MacLaine. Irresistible.

Live by Night

Live By Night

  • Directed by: Ben Affleck
  • Cast: Ben Affleck, Scott Eastwood, Zoe Saldana

Joe Coughlin (Affleck) is a mobster and WW1 veteran who aims to avenge the death of his lover. Lavish production values and fine performances aside, Affleck the actor doesn't quite get under his character's skin and this isn't up to the standard of his previous directorial work.

Twelve-year-old Conor (MacDougall) has a mother (Jones) who's battling cancer and a father (Kebbell) who's walked out; then a yew-tree-shaped monster with Neeson's voice comes into his life. Coming-of-age tearjerker with a sometimes thin story, but fine performances from Jones and MacDougall.

During a 120-year space journey to a new planet, Jim (Pratt) wakes up early from hibernation, and faced with the prospect of living entirely alone, he wakes up Aurora (Lawrence). Despite sleek and inventive visuals, it's a predictable love story that turns out to be an empty vessel.

Kevin (McAvoy) suffers from dissociative identity disorder; when he kidnaps three teenage girls, best pals Marcia (Sula) and Claire (Richardson) and troubled loner Casey (Taylor-Joy), multi-personality strangeness ensues. With superb work from McAvoy and Taylor-Joy, this is easily Shyamalan's most compelling and intelligent movie in years.

Trolls are cute creatures who love EDM and warm hugs, but they're preyed on by Bergens, toothy monsters who think eating Trolls will bring happiness. Hyperactive buddy movie with dazzling visuals and lots of ditzy fun, but not as fresh or original as some of the competition.
