Christopher Robin

  • US
  • 1h 44min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Marc Forster
  • Cast: Hayley Atwell, Ewan McGregor, Jim Cummings

Christopher Robin (McGregor) is a workaholic who neglects his family, until he re-encounters his childhood toys. Whimsical and unoriginal back-to-childhood tale, not saved by McGregor’s dexterity or Cummings’s lovely voice work as Pooh.

The Commuter

The Commuter

  • 1h 44min

  • Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra
  • Cast: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson

Michael McCauley (Neeson) is made redundant one day. On the train home, the mysterious Joanna (Farmiga) makes him a cash offer to find someone. Neeson and Collet-Serra’s fourth collaboration is as generic as it sounds, with breathless action, numerous plot holes and a ludicrous story.

The House with a Clock in its Walls

The House with a Clock in its Walls
  • 2018
  • US
  • 1h 44min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Eli Roth
  • Cast: Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Owen Vaccaro

Lewis (Vaccaro) is an orphan sent to live with his mysterious uncle Jonathan (Black). Roth takes a break from gore to turn this children’s book into family fare, and it’s atmospheric, but lacks charm; still, Black is great casting and the themes of grief and bravery are handled well.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
  • 2018

  • PG
  • Directed by: Ol Parker
  • Cast: Christine Baranski, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Julie Walters, Alexa Davies, Pierce Brosnan, Jeremy Irvine, Colin Firth, Hugh Skinner, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Dylan, Cher, Dominic Cooper, Andy García

Sequel to the feel-good ABBA musical Mamma Mia! Despite its absurdities and shoe-horning of ABBA songs, at its heart is a touching mother-daughter love story and an irresistible esprit de corps.

Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene
  • 2018
  • US
  • 2h
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Garth Davis
  • Cast: Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor

And Mary Magdalene (Mara) went forth from her home village to follow a charismatic healer-prophet-rabbi (Phoenix) whose message stirs her soul. Grace, strength and inner fire did Mara convey, but much dishevelled was Phoenix, even unto resembling Charles Manson. And behold, thoughtful and refreshing was the movie, yet also a tad bland.
