  • Directed by: Damien Chazelle
  • Cast: Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, J.K. Simmons

In Los Angeles, aspiring actress Mia (Stone) falls for jazz musician Sebastian (Gosling). Audaciously inventive homage to classic movie musicals, technically wonderful and joyously emotional, with Gosling as a goofy idealistic charmer and Stone showing the versatility, vulnerability and talent of a young Shirley MacLaine. Irresistible.

Twelve-year-old Conor (MacDougall) has a mother (Jones) who's battling cancer and a father (Kebbell) who's walked out; then a yew-tree-shaped monster with Neeson's voice comes into his life. Coming-of-age tearjerker with a sometimes thin story, but fine performances from Jones and MacDougall.

Kevin (McAvoy) suffers from dissociative identity disorder; when he kidnaps three teenage girls, best pals Marcia (Sula) and Claire (Richardson) and troubled loner Casey (Taylor-Joy), multi-personality strangeness ensues. With superb work from McAvoy and Taylor-Joy, this is easily Shyamalan's most compelling and intelligent movie in years.

Underworld: Blood Wars

Underworld: Blood Wars

  • US
  • 91 min

  • Directed by: Anna Foerster
  • Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Trent Garrett, Tobias Menzies, Lara Pulver, Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James, Charles Dance

Selene (Beckinsale) makes an alliance with her former coven, which fears an attack from the werewolves. The world's dullest vampires are back, still droning on about the same old back-story, and engaging in poorly staged and repetitive action sequences. Beckinsale does her very best, but this franchise is long overdue for a stake through the heart.
