Jean Dubuffet

Spanning more than four decades in the studio, this exhibition brings together powerful work by the French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985). This show is the first in the UK in more than 50 years, highlighting Dubuffet’s radicalism as he experimented with materials and aimed to create what he described as:

‘an art that is directly plugged into our current life, that immediately emanates from our real life and our real moods.’

Dubuffet was one of the first to champion ‘Art Brut’ – a phrase he coined, which literally translates as ‘raw art’. The exhibition explores his lifelong pursuit of authentic expression, featuring rarely exhibited pieces from international museums and private collections.

LSO/Rattle: Beethoven Piano Concertos 1 & 2

‘Any performance by Zimerman is a special occasion,’ says The Guardian, and this phenomenal Polish pianist is as much a visionary as a virtuoso. Today, he begins a full cycle of Beethoven’s piano concertos with the LSO: a magnificent way to crown this year of Beethoven celebrations.

By any standards, this is a big event – but Beethoven looked to the future as well as the past, and Zimerman himself is an artist who never takes the obvious path. So Sir Simon is taking the opportunity to champion a forgotten titan of 20th-century music: Paul Hindemith, who defied Nazism, and wrote music as outspoken as it is compelling. His rarely heard Symphonic Dances form an arresting backdrop to Beethoven’s sunny, youthful concertos.

The performance is expected to finish around 9.30pm, including a 20 minute interval.

LSO/Rattle: Tristan and Isolde

Darkness falls, and love finds a way. In Act II of Tristan und Isolde, the summer night itself seems to shimmer with emotion, as the two lovers consummate their desire beneath a canopy of stars. Yet treachery hides in the shadows, and with a cast this good the human tragedy will be as overwhelming as Wagner’s world-changing music.

If you’re already a Wagnerite, the names Nina Stemme and Stuart Skelton should speak for themselves. Add Jamie Barton as Isolde’s devoted friend Brangaene and Stephen MiIling as King Marke, and it’s no exaggeration to call this a world-class cast. If you’re not, there’s no more intoxicating entry point into Wagner’s world than this glowing portrayal of two people in a broken world, united – and redeemed – by a love that’s stronger than death.

The performance is expected to last around 2 hours.
