Lance Corporals Schofield (MacKay) and Blake (Chapman) are given the job of hand-delivering a message to another unit, across the mud and misery of the trenches. It suffers from simplistic dialogue and flat characterisation, but it’s visually impressive and a respectable, heartfelt tribute to the sacrifice of WWI.

Mike (Smith) and Marcus (Lawrence) are back, tracking down a mysterious assassin with the help of younger colleagues. The best film in the franchise so far, it’s full of the expected action but also develops the relationship between the leads. Great fun, and the most purely entertaining movie Smith has made in a while.

In the sequel to the 2017 reboot, old-timers Eddie (DeVito) and Milo (Glover) join the teens in an another video game adventure. Johnson and Awkwafina steal their scenes, although Gillan has to do too much exposition before she can get going, and while it’s a bit too similar to its predecessor it’s amiable festive fun.

Walter (Foxx) is convicted of the murder of a teenage white girl on the testimony of one felon (Blake-Nelson), despite a lack of incriminating evidence. Lawyer Bryan (Jordan) acts on his behalf. Old-fashioned, crusading legal drama which builds into an emotional and thought-provoking confrontation of the abiding racism in American society.

  • Directed by: Greta Gerwig
  • Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, Chris Cooper

Adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel about a group of sisters growing up after the American Civil War. Gerwig’s affection and respect for the book is obvious but she boldly captures the transition from childhood to womanhood by playing with structure; an outstanding cast and skilful filmmaking make it a beautifully crafted tale of sisterhood, memory and authorship.
