Blow-Up

Bigger than Life presents: Blow-Up, a 35mm Engagement.

When a hip, egocentric fashion photographer (David Hemmings) discovers he might have unwittingly captured a murder whilst taking pictures of two strangers in the park, his obsessive investigations lead him stumbling into a web of intrigue and conspiracy that runs through a dark vision of swinging London.

A fascinating detour in the career of the revered Italian maestro, Michelangelo Antonioni, whose films helped change the face of European Cinema in the early 1960’s, Blow-Up is arguably the definitive portrait of the swinging 60’s capturing the hedonism and danger of a city in the midst of a cultural revolution encompassing sex, drugs, fashion and, of course rock’n’roll.

King Of Pop - The Legend Continues Starring 'Navi'

Get ready to moonwalk the night away at a show whos star performer ‘Navi’ once earned a standing ovation from Michael Jackson himself.

King Of Pop – The Legend Continues is currently on tour in the UK and is taking British theatres by storm. The superb production stars the world’s No.1 MJ impersonator ‘Navi’ who was actually invited to perform at two of Michael Jackson’s birthday parties in LA and New York. Michael not only applauded Navi but also gave him a standing ovation and invited the impersonator to spend a day at his home ‘Neverland’. The pair remained close and due to Navi’s uncanny resemblance to the star, he was often hired by Michael to act as a decoy to distract mobs of fans and press.

Navi has since continued to work at the highest level performing in a whopping 57 different countries and is now back in the UK for a national theatre tour along with his incredible live band and dancers. Navi brilliantly recreates all the magical classics from the early Jackson 5 songs to mega-hits such as Thriller and Smooth Criminal in a show the whole family will enjoy.

Tickets for Metropolis at Stockport Plaza

" Drawing on – and defining – classic sci-fi themes, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future in which society is thoroughly divided in two: while anonymous workers conduct their endless drudgery below ground their rulers enjoy a decadent life of leisure and luxury. When Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) ventures into the depths in search of the beautiful Maria (Brigitte Helm in her debut role), plans of rebellion are revealed and a Maria-replica robot is programmed by mad inventor Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) and master of Metropolis Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel) to incite the workers into a self-destructive riot.    With its dizzying depiction of a futuristic cityscape and alluring female robot, Metropolis is among the most famous of all German films and the mother of sci-fi cinema (an influence on Blade Runner and Star Wars, among countless other films). Directed by the legendary Fritz Lang (M, Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse, The Big Heat, etc.), its jaw-dropping production values, iconic imagery, and modernist grandeur – it was described by Luis Buñuel as "a captivating symphony of movement" – remain as powerful as ever.     This screening of Metropolis features the reconstructed and restored version of the film accompanied by the original Huppertz score

Sir Alec Guinness Double Bill

In two of his greatest films The Plaza is honoured to present a double bill homage to one of our nation’s greatest actors Sir Alec Guinness   In the 1955 release of The Lady Killers, Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) likes to report suspicious behaviour to the police. Unaware of her reputation, the dapper thief Professor Marcus (Alec Guinness) rents rooms in the elderly widow's home for himself and his band of cohorts. Posing as a string quintet, the thieves pull off a bank robbery, but slip up in front of the old woman as they try to escape. Agreed that they need to murder her, the bumbling crooks wind up double-crossing each other and slowly killing themselves off.   The 1949 release Kind Hearts and Coronets is set in the stately Edwardian era and is black comedy at its best, with the most articulate and literate of all Ealing screenplays. Sir Alec Guinness gives a virtuoso performance in his Ealing comedy debut, playing all eight victims standing between a mass-murderer and his family fortune.

Zeffirelli's film is partly autobiographical, partly fictitious, and concerns his own upbringing and education by a group of English ladies living in Florence at the time of Il Duce's rise to power. This particular brew by Zeffirelli and John Mortimer has a melange of flavours and is deftly poured in the most idyllic of settings, yet it seems oddly lacking in zest.

Stylised gang warfare flick that avoids the temptations of graphic violence and instead lifts the subject matter to something approaching medieval myth: the New York streets are labyrinths, the gangs are decked out in tribal dress, and a dangerous nighttime journey across the city becomes a heroic quest. Moments of humour and a great soundtrack add to the enjoyment of what is one of Hill's best achievements.
