Allied

Allied
  • 2016

  • Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
  • Cast: Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Jared Harris

Max (Pitt) is a Canadian intelligence officer who parachutes into French Morocco in 1942 so that he can pose as the husband of Resistance agent Marianne (Cotillard). A clean-cut Casablanca wannabe with nice supporting turns, but while the stars look fantastic, they seem awkward and it never really comes to life.

When 12 granite pod-like spaceships land on Earth, linguistic expert Dr Louise Banks (Adams) is recruited to try to communicate with their owners. Powerful, intelligent and profound sci-fi, with assured direction, impressive but restrained effects and anchored by a mesmerising performance from Adams as the brave, vulnerable and fallible central character.

Bad Santa 2

  • Directed by: Mark Waters
  • Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, Brett Kelly, Kathy Bates, Christina Hendricks

Willie (Thornton) has slid back to rock bottom when his estranged accomplice Marcus (Cox) returns with the promise of a big payday. The first film was foul-mouthed, politically incorrect, lewd and rude, but also bracing and very funny. This is just bludgeoning, misanthropic and depressing and should never have been made.

  • Directed by: Kelly Fremon Craig
  • Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Haley Lu Richardson, Blake Jenner, Woody Harrelson

Nadine (Steinfeld) is a smart, self-obsessed, suburbanite teenager whose best friend Krista (Richardson) jumps into bed with her sporty brother Darian (Jenner). Refreshingly smart, acerbic, articulate teen dramedy with a strong performance from Steinfeld and Harrelson engagingly combative as her teacher. Predictable? Maybe. Worthy of comparison with The Breakfast Club? Hell yes.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
  • 2016
  • UK/US
  • Directed by: David Yates
  • Written by: J.K. Rowling
  • Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston

Newt Scamander (Redmayne), a socially-challenged animal whisperer of sorts, has to gather up the fantastic beasts which have escaped from his briefcase and are roaming 1920s New York. A suitably magical spin-off, with Rowling's screenplay skilfully balancing dark and light, and director Yates maintaining a thrilling pace and exciting spectacle.

  • Written by: Victoria Strouse
  • Cast: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Ty Burrell, Willem Dafoe

In the sequel to the much-loved Finding Nemo, annoyingly forgetful Dory goes on an adventure to find her family, crossing three oceans to get to them with Marlon and Nemo just a swish behind her.

Moana

Moana

  • 103 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Ron Clements, John Musker
  • Cast: Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Alan Tudyk

Moana (Carvalho) is a Polynesian girl who revives the voyaging tradition of her island tribe, with the help of buffoonish demigod Maui (Johnson, sending himself up.) The unabashed positivity is pure Disney but Bush's zingy screenplay satirises the studio's princess obsession and doesn't bother with a love interest. A spirited, vividly realised and genuinely rousing adventure.i.

Storks used to deliver babies, but now they run an Amazon-style delivery service; then ambitious stork Junior (Samberg) and colleague Tulip (Crown) have to deliver an actual baby. Colourful animation and some amusing voice work can't fix the gigantic plot holes, which will leave both parents and kids scratching their heads.

Sully

Sully

  • Cast: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney

The story of pilot Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger (Hanks), who became an unassuming hero in 2009 after successfully ditching a US Airways Airbus 320 on the Hudson River. Eckhart gives strong support as co-pilot Jeff Skiles but the film belongs to Hanks, whose understated performance, with the skilful re-enactments of the crash, make for riveting drama.

Trolls are cute creatures who love EDM and warm hugs, but they're preyed on by Bergens, toothy monsters who think eating Trolls will bring happiness. Hyperactive buddy movie with dazzling visuals and lots of ditzy fun, but not as fresh or original as some of the competition.

In post-war London, Ruth (Pike) and black law student Seretse (Oyelowo) fall in love; the thing is, he's first in line to the throne of Bechuanaland (today's Botswana). Based on a true story; Pike and Oyelowo bring a warm human touch to this sentimental but well-crafted history lesson.
