Five years after Thanos’s victory, the Avengers are in despair until Ant-Man (Rudd) kicks the story back into action. The final film in the saga verges on fanservice, but there’s intelligent character development, everyone (except Johansson) is given enough to do, and some arcs have a truly poignant sense of closure. Playful, inventive and highly entertaining.

Out of Blue

Out of Blue
  • 2018
  • US/UK
  • 1h 50min
  • Directed by: Carol Morley
  • Cast: Patricia Clarkson, James Caan, Toby Jones

Mike Hoolihan (Clarkson) is an alcoholic, world-weary detective trying to investigate the death of astrophysicist Jennifer Rockwell (Gummer). Morley seems to be going for something Lynchian and dreamlike but this adaptation of Martin Amis’s novel isn’t strange enough to beguile, there’s too much nonsense dialogue about black holes, and the conclusion is stale.

  • Directed by: Brady Corbet
  • Cast: Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin

Celeste (Portman) is a pop sensation on a comeback tour, who in her early teens survived a school shooting. A tantalising and layered character portrait with game performances from a fine cast; Portman is in her element and Law is perfect as her smoke-blowing manager.
