Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
  • 2020
  • US
  • 1h 49min

  • Directed by: Cathy Yan
  • Cast: Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ewan McGregor, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Chris Messina, Rosie Perez, Ella Jay Basco

Harley Quinn (Robbie), having broken up with the Joker, finds herself the target of old enemies. The script could have used a few more comic putdowns, but the old-school action is solid, the setting is proudly the gutter and Robbie’s brilliant, ebullient performance as the mischievous Harley ensures a consistent sense of mischief. Top-tier comic book stuff.

Dolittle

Dolittle
  • 2020
  • US
  • 1h 41min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Stephen Gaghan
  • Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Marion Cotillard

Dr Dolittle (Downey) is grieving the death of his wife Lily when a young boy (Collett) and Lady Rose (Laniado) both come to ask him for help. The plot is a barely connected bunch of scenes, action sequences are hinted at but unrealised. The worst adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s stories to date: all this talent wasted in a big furry disappointment.

Emma

Emma

  • Directed by: Autumn de Wilde
  • Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Josh O'Connor, Gemma Whelan

Emma (Taylor-Joy) is a self-important matchmaker blinded by snobbery and youthful hubris. It’s in keeping with the vogue for complex, unapologetic heroines but the comedy is rather hit and miss and it looks great. Taylor-Joy’s alert performance makes Emma her own.

A meteor lands in Adventure Bay and gives the pups superpowers, but also gives superpowers to nasty Harold of neighbouring Foggy Bottom. Basically a 70-minute extended episode of the series, enjoyably innocuous and easy to follow, although parents won’t be pleased when the toy requests come in after the end credits roll.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog

  • US / Japan
  • Directed by: Jeff Fowler
  • Cast: James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter

Sonic (Schwartz) finds himself alone on Earth, on the run from the authorities, with villain Dr Robotnik (Carrey) also in pursuit. A derivative script and a rather tired performance from Carrey aside, it’s got disarming charm and cheek and Sonic is a cutely cartoonish hero.
