- Directed by: Nora Twomey
- Cast: Saara Chaudry, Soma Chhaya, Noorin Gulamgaus
Parvana (Chaudry) is an 11-year-old girl living in Kabul, who when her father is arrested by the Taliban, disguises herself as a boy so she can move around unimpeded. The animation is elegantly simple and it’s a valiant effort, but the script lacks clarity and it’s hard to see how children would take to such a politically-charged narrative.

- 1h 42min
- Directed by: Adrian Shergold
- Cast: Maxine Peake, Stephen Graham, Paddy Considine
Funny Cow (Peake) is a northern woman who takes to stand-up comedy in the 70s and 80s. The film foregrounds the pain and suffering involved, from her abusive husband Bob (Pitts, also the screenwriter) and the grim reality of working men’s clubs. A fine supporting cast is largely wasted, but a great soundtrack and Peake’s fearless performance give it plenty of soul.
Fri 10 May
- 2h 15min
- Directed by: Bradley Cooper
- Cast: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott
Jackson (Cooper) is a famous musician, his best years behind him, who discovers young singer Ally (Gaga) in a bar one night. What could have been yet another remake is a revelation: Gaga sings up a storm and is nuanced and convincing, but Cooper is extraordinary as co-writer, producer, director and star. Smart, funny and heartbreaking.
