Denial

  • 2016
  • UK/US
  • 109 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Mick Jackson
  • Cast: Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Spall

Deborah Lipstadt (Weisz) in a historian and lecturer who faces a libel suit after she derides controversial author David Irving (Spall) for his views on the Holocaust. This dramatisation of a 1996 court case has some compelling stretches, but Hare’s script lacks insight and it’s little more than a dry reconstruction of the trial.

In Los Angeles, aspiring actress Mia (Stone) falls for jazz musician Sebastian (Gosling). Audaciously inventive homage to classic movie musicals, technically wonderful and joyously emotional, with Gosling as a goofy idealistic charmer and Stone showing the versatility, vulnerability and talent of a young Shirley MacLaine. Irresistible.

The true story of Saroo Brierley, who aged five is separated from his mother and family in India, declared lost and adopted by an Australian couple, only to track his family down years later using Google Earth. Hugely emotional, remarkably assured debut from Davis, with fine performances.

Joe Coughlin (Affleck) is a mobster and WW1 veteran who aims to avenge the death of his lover. Lavish production values and fine performances aside, Affleck the actor doesn't quite get under his character's skin and this isn't up to the standard of his previous directorial work.

Trainspotting

  • UK
  • 93 min

  • Directed by: Danny Boyle
  • Cast: Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle, Kelly Macdonald

John Hodge's screenplay perfectly captures the desperate humour of Irvine Welsh's novel, keeping the episodic structure of junkie scenes for the first half before concentrating on Renton in London in the later stages. Fast and stylish direction, with a creative soundtrack and acting that's off-the-rails excellent, this cinematic blast from beginning to end shows a complex – and true – understanding of the lure and fatal consequences of drug-taking.

Renton (McGregor) returns to Edinburgh from Amsterdam, two decades on. Hodge's blood-pumping script builds on the original with characters that are older, sadder and definitely not wiser, and resentment and guilt festering like an open sore; but is it Archie-Gemmill-scoring-against Holland good? Yes, it is.
