Alice Through the Looking Glass

Alice Through the Looking Glass
  • 2016
  • US
  • PG
  • Directed by: James Bobin
  • Cast: Mia Wasikowsksa, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen

Alice (Wasikowska) has to travel back in time to help the Mad Hatter (Depp), to the annoyance of Time (Baron Cohen). Nimble blockbuster with a good blend of mirth and melancholy, and director Bobin never lets the CGI swamp the story in the way Burton did in the first film.

  • Directed by: Clay Kaytis/Fergal Reilly
  • Written by: Jon Vitti
  • Cast: Peter Dinklage, Kate McKinnon, Jason Sudeikis

Red (Sudeikis), a notably angry bird, joins an anger management class and makes some friends, but then green pigs arrive in the neighbourhood. Amusing if delayed adaptation of the smartphone game, with plenty of gags and puns for accompanying adults.

Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War
  • 2016
  • US
  • 147 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
  • Written by: Christopher Markus , Stephen McFeely, Mark Millar (comic book)
  • Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Frank Grillo, Daniel Brühl, William Hurt

When world leaders demand that the Avengers operate under UN supervision, the team splits. If you haven't seen previous instalments it will make no sense, but if you have, all the plot points bear bittersweet fruit, in a brilliant combination of hectic action and one liners with intimate, heartbreaking moments.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book
  • 2016
  • US
  • 106 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Jon Favreau
  • Written by: Justin Marks (screenplay), Rudyard Kipling
  • Cast: Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken

You know the story: boy (Sethi) left in woods, adopted by wolves (Nyong'o and Esposito), mentored by panther (Kingsley), befriended by bear (Murray), hunted by tiger (Elba, terrifying). Favreau and his team successfully retool the story with stunning CGI, and a script with heart, soul and spirit. A feelgood delight.

Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3
  • 2016
  • US/China
  • 95 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Jennifer Yuh Nelson, Alessandro Carloni
  • Cast: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, David Cross, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Rebel Wilson, Bryan Cranston, JK Simmons

When Master Shifu (Hoffman) retires, Po (Black) is nonplussed to be promoted to teacher-trainer; then demon water buffalo Kai (Simmons) starts raising a zombie army and Po is reunited with his dad (Cranston)! Black is as lovable as ever, and with the excellent cast, frantic action, sight gags, cute baby pandas and stunning effects, it's a pity the script is a bit humdrum.

Money Monster

Money Monster

  • Directed by: Jodie Foster
  • Cast: Jack O'Connell, Julia Roberts, George Clooney

Lee Gates (Clooney) is a motormouth host of a financial advice show, directed by Patty (Roberts); then desperate Kyle (O'Connell) hijacks the show and forces Lee to wear a bomb vest. Earnest and moderately entertaining hostage thriller, but despite good performances and snappy editing it comes close to being The Big Short for Dummies.

The Nice Guys
  • 2016

  • Directed by: Shane Black
  • Written by: Anthony Bagarozzi, Shane Black
  • Cast: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice

Los Angeles, 1977: gruff enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) teams up with rather useless private eye Holland March (Gosling) to investigate the murder of a porn star. Obscenely entertaining period comedy from director/co-writer Black, sublimely silly and wonderfully inappropriate. Gosling is superb, while Crowe displays a hitherto untapped gift for comedy.

Top Cat and his cat pals get together in this prequel to 2011's Top Cat: The Movie. Simple knockabout fun, closer in spirit to the original cartoon series than the earlier film.

  • Directed by: Duncan Jones
  • Cast: Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Rob Kazinsky, Daniel Wu, Ben Schnetzer, Ruth Negga, Anna Galvin, Clancy Brown

Ordinarily we wouldn't expect much of a film adapted from a video game but this is directed by Duncan 'Moon' Jones. Whether the drama is strong enough to outweigh the abundant CGI remains to be seen.

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse
  • 2016
  • US
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Bryan Singer
  • Written by: Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris, Simon Kinberg, Bryan Singer

Waking from a ten-year slumber, Apocalypse (Isaac) enlists Erik/Magneto (Fassbender) in his evil plans. Plenty of superficial excitement but a distinct lack of narrative ambition; with an extraordinary ensemble wasted in a franchise that's run dry of ideas.
