The Clean Energy Revolution

With climate change threatening to spiral out of control, the time has come to accelerate our transition from oil, coal and gas to alternative energy sources. Our burning of fossil fuels dates back millennia, but our reliance on them in the past two centuries has increased dramatically. Solar, wind, tidal, geothermal energy as well as advances in energy storage offer greener alternatives. That’s before we even get to nuclear fusion, long considered the Holy Grail of energy solutions – a clean and virtually limitless supply of energy that could in principle provide all our power with almost no carbon emissions – and large scale fusion projects worldwide appear tantalisingly close to achieving it. Although some claim that fusion is thirty years away and always will be. How can governments, businesses, scientists, and citizens work together to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy? This virtual panel discussion aims to find out. Speakers include: Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn-Smith FRS: Emeritus Professor of Physics, Oxford University, former Director-General of CERN and Chair of ITER The Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP: Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial StrategyWilliam Kamkwamba: Malawian inventor, co-author of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and founder of the Moving Windmills Project. Professor Jim Al-Khalili FRS (Chair): Theoretical physicist, author, broadcaster and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific. Further speakers to be announced.

Climate Change: The View From Space

Astronauts Helen Sharman and Tim Peake join astrophysicist and The Sky At Night presenter Maggie Aderin-Pocock and UNOOSA’s Simonetta Di Pippo as they assess how human spaceflight has helped us appreciate our planet. From the incredible insights we’ve gained about Earth as we’ve learnt more about neighbouring planets, to the way in which international collaboration and advances in satellites and remote sensing are helping us track the effects of climate change more accurately than ever before. Speakers include: Helen Sharman: The first British astronaut and the first woman to visit the Mir space station in 1991. Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE: Astrophysicist, author, and BAFTA-nominated presenter of The Sky at Night. Simonetta Di Pippo: Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and former Director of Human Spaceflight for the European Space Agency. Tim Peake: The most recent Briton in space and first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station, spending six months there from 2015-2016. Dr Kevin Fong (Chair): Doctor, science broadcaster and author.

Climate Change: Why Should We Care?

Science broadcaster Dr Hannah Fry is joined by a panel of experts—including famed conservationist Dr Jane Goodall—to explore the big question: how will climate change affect our future? What will Earth be like for future generations? We’re bringing together an international panel of scientists, policy experts and climate activists to kick off the Climate Talks series and discuss why action is needed now if we’re to tackle the incredible challenges presented by climate change. Delve into the science, hear some uncomfortable facts about the state of our planet and be inspired by efforts from across the globe which are beginning to make a real difference. Speakers include: Dr Jane Goodall, DBE: Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a UN Messenger of Peace, an ethologist and conservationist known for her ground-breaking research into the lives of wild chimpanzee in Gombe, Tanzania, now in its 60th year.Kira Peter-Hansen MEP: Climate advocate and the youngest ever Member of European Parliament Dr Tamsin Edwards: Climate scientist at King’s College London and a lead author of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment ReportWanjuhi Njoroge: Climate activist, forest restoration advocate, entrepreneur and founder of People, Planet Africa Dr Hannah Fry (Chair): Associate Professor in the Mathematics of Cities at UCL, broadcaster, and science writer.

The Clockmakers’ Museum

Discover the world’s oldest clock and watch collection in its new home at the Science Museum. The collection includes more than 600 watches, 80 clocks, 25 marine chronometers and a number of fine sundials and examples of hand engraving, mapping the history of innovation in watch and clock making in London from 1600 to the present day. Assembled by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and once located in the Guildhall, this remarkable array of timepieces traces the story of the capital’s clockmakers—from their first marine chronometers and mechanical clocks through the evolution of the wristwatch. John Harrison was the inventor of the marine chronometer. Among the collection’s highlights is the fifth chronometer he made, which he completed in 1770, and a four-month duration longcase clock by the father of English watchmaking, Thomas Tompion. An intricate British-made watch, the Space Traveller II, is now on display. Watchmaker George Daniels made almost every part of this watch by hand in the early 1980s.

Exploring Space

From rockets to satellites, probes to landers, this gallery showcases some out-of-this world objects. You’ll be able to see a full-sized replica of Eagle—the lander that took astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin to the Moon in 1969. Then discover how we are able to live in space—to breathe, eat, drink and go to the toilet.Get a unique insight into the history of rockets. Suspended from the ceiling are two real space rockets—a British Black Arrow and a United States Scout. You can also find out how the space age started in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik 1 and see a full-size replica of the Huygens module that landed on Titan in 2005 and a model of the Beagle 2 Mars lander.Return of SoyuzAfter a record-breaking national tour, the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module that safely carried astronauts Tim Peake, Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra back from the International Space Station in 2016 is now on permanent display in the Exploring Space gallery. Is Capitalism Compatible with Environmentalism?

How can we reconcile boosting profits with stewardship of our planet? Can we resolve the tension between these very different objectives? Journalist and broadcaster Jon Snow will guest chair a panel of experts in economics, policy and climate science to examine these important questions.  Through transforming the energy sector to rethinking the way we build houses, streets and entire cities, a range of reforms—such as a green new deal—have the potential to change the way we live, for the better. But what are the political and economic obstacles that lie between reconciling capitalism and sustainable development? And what is the science that underpins it all? This virtual panel discussion will seek the answers. Speakers include: Professor Joanna Haigh FRS: Climate scientist and Co-Director of the Grantham Institute, Imperial College 2014-2019. Professor Robert Pollin: Co-Director of the Political Economy Research Institute, UMass Amherst, co-author of Climate Crisis and the Global Green New Deal. Jon Snow (Chair): Journalist and television presenter, the longest-running presenter of Channel 4 News. Further speakers to be announced.

Our Future Planet: Global Greenhouse Gas Removal

Hear leading scientists and environmental journalists explore the many aspects of carbon capture, including reforestation, and rewilding as well as a range of industrial methods. As well as reducing our CO2 emissions, capturing carbon from the atmosphere could be another way to limit climate change. We’ll be discussing whether this approach offers a solution to the unfolding climate crisis or if it simply offers a false sense of security. A discussion of the practicalities, pitfalls and opportunities will coincide with the opening of the Science Museum’s new exhibition Our Future Planet. Speakers include: Dr Emily Shuckburgh: Director of Cambridge Zero at the University of Cambridge. George Monbiot: Environmental activist, Guardian columnist and bestselling author of several books including the upcoming This Can’t Be Happening, published in 2021. Professor Gideon Henderson: Chief Scientific Advisor at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Professor Nilay Shah: Head of Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College Robin Ince (Chair): Broadcaster, author, co-presenter of The Infinite Monkey Cage and Cosmic Shambles. Further speakers to be announced.

Pattern Pod

The Science Museum is temporarily closed. Sign up below to be emailed when Pattern Pod tickets go on sale.Fill out my Wufoo form!Pattern Pod is an amazing multi-sensory area for children under 8 years old.In Pattern Pod, children can explore water ripples without getting their feet wet, create symmetrical images on touch screens, follow robot trails and much more. Fun, interactive exhibits encourage them to recognise and copy patterns—or create entirely new ones of their own.Like scientists, children explore the world by trying to make predictions about events happening around them. It’s often easier to make these predictions if these events repeat themselves or if there is a pattern to them.Visit Pattern Pod on the ground floor of the museum—it’s a fun and stimulating place where children can learn through play to develop their science skills.
