Backbeat

Backbeat
  • 1994
  • 1h 36min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Iain Softley
  • Cast: Ian Hart, Stephen Dorff, Sheryl Lee, Gary Bakewell

The birth of the Beatles, early 90s style, with the Fabs' manic Hamburg sound well-conveyed by an all-star pickup band including members of REM, Nirvana, and Sonic Youth. Hart is wonderfully dry as Lennon, Dorff is touching as doomed Stu Sutcliffe, and Lee is pixieish and contained as the German girl who came between them. Predictable, but gritty and entertaining.
