The Guilty

Gustav Möller / Denmark, Norway 2018 / 85 min / Cert 15 / Subtitles   Denmark’s entry for the 2019 Academy Awards is a high-concept, low-budget and skilfully muscle-tensing thriller. Jacob Cedergren gives an amazing performance as Asger Holm, a Danish police officer in The Guilty. Holm is embroiled in a bit of controversy and is therefore relegated to working in an emergency response  centre.  While on duty he picks up on a kidnapping case with more than meets the ear. “Möller’s short, taut debut feature never leaves the claustrophobic confines of the call centre, but builds a vivid aural suspense narrative through the receiver, all while  incrementally unboxing the visible protagonist’s own frail mental state” (Variety).

The Guilty

  • 2018

  • 1h 25min

  • Directed by: Gustav Möller
  • Cast: Jakob Cedergren, Jessica Dinnage, Omar Shargawi

Asger (Cedergren) is a former police officer now reduced to taking emergency calls, when he gets a call from a woman (Dinnage) who claims to have been kidnapped by her ex-husband. Möller sets the entire film in his office, skilfully generating tension with clever use of sound and the compelling presence of Cedergren. A bold thriller.
