Beauty and the Beast

  • Directed by: Bill Condon
  • Cast: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Emma Thompson, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Josh Gad

Belle (Watson) is forced to live with a Beast (Stevens) in this live-action retelling of the 1991 blockbuster. Watson is winsome but feisty, Evans as Gaston is splendid of voice and hilariously odious, McGregor brings much joie de vivre to ‘Be Our Guest’, and it’s an enchantingly realised delight.

  • Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford

Chris (Kaluuya) heads to upstate New York with his girlfriend Rose (Williams), for a dinner with her supposedly liberal parents (Whitford and Keener), only to find that things are very much other than they seem. Peele’s deep understanding of horror movies tropes combines with his own experiences as a black American, to make a sharp, taut and precisely crafted reflection on racial tensions in America.

Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island

  • 118 min

  • Directed by: Jordan Vogt-Roberts
  • Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Jing Tian, Toby Kebbell, John Ortiz, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Shea Whigham, Thomas Mann, Terry Notary, John C. Reilly

In 1973 a team of scientists goes to explore a recently discovered island with its own ecosystem, which turns out to include a 100-foot-tall ape which can punch helicopters out of the sky. Kong himself is impressive, if his fellow beasts are less so, and a great cast and able direction make this a monstrously entertaining actioner.

A Mars mission docks with the ISS bearing a single-celled alien organism, which then bursts out of containment. Derivative sci-fi drama which feels like a blend / rip-off of Alien and Gravity; you spend most of it wondering who’ll die next. Reasonably effective but inessential.

  • Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Stephen Merchant

Grey-haired, boozy and ailing, Logan (Jackman) is caring for the now elderly Charles Xavier (Stewart) when he encounters a young mutant girl, Laura (Keen). A glorious swansong for Wolverine; the world-weary tone, low-key setting and ballsy climax really impress. First class.

Moana

Moana

  • 103 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Ron Clements, John Musker
  • Cast: Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Alan Tudyk

Moana (Carvalho) is a plucky Polynesian girl who revives the voyaging tradition of her island tribe, with the help of buffoonish demigod Maui (Johnson, exuberantly sending himself up.) The unabashed positivity is pure Disney but Bush's zingy screenplay satirises the studio's princess obsession and there's a refreshing lack of a love interest. A spirited, vividly realised and genuinely rousing adventure.

  • Cast: Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe, Naomie Harris

The story of a young black man growing up, struggling with his sexuality and neglected by his drug-addicted mother. Astutely judged and beautifully humane sophomore feature from Jenkins, with sublime work from the three actors playing the main character (Hibbert, Sanders, Rhodes) and fine support from Ali, Harris and Monáe. Terrific.

Five misfit teenagers take too long to bond into a primary-coloured superteam, in this third crack at a cinema version of the TV show. Banks has a ball as the cackling, lunatic villain Rita Repulsa, but it never finds its footing, resorts to the usual superhero ultra-carnage, and powers down long before the end.

  • Cast: James McAvoy, Jessica Sula, Haley Lu Richardson, Anya Taylor-Joy

Kevin (McAvoy) suffers from dissociative identity disorder; when he kidnaps three teenage girls, best pals Marcia (Sula) and Claire (Richardson) and troubled loner Casey (Taylor-Joy), multi-personality strangeness ensues. With superb work from McAvoy and Taylor-Joy, this is easily Shyamalan's most compelling and intelligent movie in years.
