The photorealistic version of the beloved Disney story has memorable visuals, impressive set-pieces and adorable yet credible animals, but precisely because they’re so realistic, it’s weird when they speak and even stranger when they sing. All the star voices in the world don’t count when you can’t simulate heart and soul.

Chihiro travels through a tunnel into another world, where she happens upon a bathhouse for the spirits. After chowing down greedily on some spiked local produce, Chihiro's parents are transformed into pigs, leaving their suddenly dutiful daughter to seek work in the bathhouse in order to release them. Philosophy, anime and shamanism – this is something really stunning that needs to be seen to be believed.

  • Cast: Franz Rogowski, Paula Beer, Godehard Giese

Georg (Rogowski) is a German refugee fleeing for Marseilles, who meets and takes with him Marie (Beer), the wife of the man whose identity he’s assumed. Petzold takes the premise of Anna Seghers’ 1942 novel and strips away the WWII context, setting it in the present; the result is a fascinating and unusual drama about the limbo in which refugees live.
