Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody
  • 2018
  • UK/USA
  • 1h 31min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Bryan Singer
  • Cast: Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Tom Hollander, Allen Leech, Mike Myers

The Freddie Mercury story. Malek as Mercury does a great job, with a passionate and impressive performance, but despite the recreation of momentous performances it’s a disappointingly tame affair, with a by-the-numbers screenplay and a bland lack of insight into Mercury’s heritage or sexuality.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
  • 2018
  • UK/US
  • 2h 14min

  • Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Johnny Depp

Newt (Redmayne) is back in London in 1927, while defeated Dark Wizard Grindelwald (Depp) has escaped and is heading to Paris. Law steps up as young Albus Dumbeldore and the film really flies in the final act, deepening characters and relationships and expanding the universe. A beast of a movie.

The House That Jack Built

The House That Jack Built
  • 2018
  • Denmark / France / Germany / Sweden
  • Directed by: Lars Von Trier
  • Cast: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman, Sofie Gråbøl

Jack (Dillon) is a serial killer who takes up murder after an annoying woman suggests he doesn’t have it in him. Dillon is convincingly sinister, but it’s just Von Trier playing with killer thriller tropes and poking fun at perceptions of himself, and it’s difficult to get offended by such an obvious attempt to provoke.

The Old Man and The Gun

  • Directed by: David Lowery
  • Cast: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek

Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Redford), a career criminal and perpetual prison escapee, who’s being chased by Texas lawman John Hunt (Affleck). Redford says it’ll be his last film and it’s a fitting ending: playful, highly entertaining and made with great skill.

  • Cast: John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Taraji P. Henson

Ralph (Reilly) and Vanellope (Silverman) have to go to the internet when her game, Sugar Rush, needs a new part. What could have been yet another film about how amazeballs the internet is, becomes a savvy and sweet tale of friendship, subtly weaving the in-jokes with the emotional stakes.

Cleo (Aparicio) is the loyal servant of a middle-class family headed by Sofia (de Tavira), in the Roma district of Mexico City in 1970-71. Beautifully crafted family drama that mixes quiet intimacy with observation of the tumultuous times in the nation, melancholy but thoroughly absorbing and gently touching.
