Breathe

Breathe
  • 2017

  • 1h 57min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Andy Serkis
  • Cast: Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Diana Rigg

Dashing young Robin (Garfield) marries lovely young Diana (Foy) and they set off for Nairobi, where Robin rather inconveniently contracts polio which paralyses him from the neck down and forces him to rely on a respirator. Serkis’s directorial debut is an unashamed tearjerker, undoubtedly heavy-handed but redeemed by Foy’s sensible presence and Garfield’s decency.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
  • 2017
  • US
  • 1h 29min
  • PG
  • Directed by: David Soren
  • Cast: Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleditch, Ed Helms

Animated superhero comedy based on the bestselling book series by Dav Pilkey. This is a film that sides with the kids, right down to its sly jabs at uncaring, cash-starved school systems and loose message about the value of laughing at yourself; and, of course, at the mere existence of a planet called Uranus.

Justice League Part One
  • 2017
  • US
  • 2h 1min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Zack Snyder
  • Cast: Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa

A team of superheroes forms to fight an alien invasion led by chief baddie Steppenwolf (Hinds). As so often, the villain is less interesting than the heroes, being a soulless CGI creation, but Affleck and Gadot are growing into their roles and it’s a lot better than the lumbering Batman vs Superman.

Murder on the Orient Express

Murder on the Orient Express
  • 2017
  • US
  • 1h 54min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Kenneth Branagh
  • Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley

Murder in the dead of night, a carriage of suspects trapped in an avalanche, and the world’s greatest detective is on hand to solve it. Against the odds, Branagh pulls off a stylish, first-class, surprisingly poignant retelling with fluid camerawork and a top cast, and has a fine old time as the arrogant, outrageously moustachioed Poirot.

My Little Pony: The Movie
  • 2017
  • 1h 39min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Jayson Thiessen
  • Cast: Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber

The Friendship Festival of Canterlot is disrupted by ruthless unicorn Tempest Shadow (Blunt), so Twilight Sparkle (Strong) and pals must embark on a rescue mission. It manages to showcase the brand without sacrificing every last ounce of soul, and is cute, simple and surefooted enough for its target audience, if not for anyone else.

Paddington 2

Paddington 2
  • 2017
  • UK/France
  • 1h 43min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Paul King
  • Cast: Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Imelda Staunton

Paddington (Whishaw) falls foul of a dastardly scheme to steal the key to a hidden fortune. The sequel to the wildly successful first film is implausibly even better, with spiffing action pieces, seemingly throwaway gags paying rich dividends later, and splendid performances from all, with Grant brilliant as the has-been thespian villain. Joyful stuff.

Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarök
  • 2017
  • US
  • 2h 10min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Taika Waititi
  • Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins

Thor (Hemsworth) reunites with his duplicitous brother Loki (Hiddleston) to battle Hela, Goddess of Death (Blanchett). Director Taika Waititi averts narrative pomposity in favour of charm, comedy and gargantuan spectacle, while Hemsworth sends himself up with skill and confidence. An askew, irreverent and wonderfully idiotic addition to the MCU.
