Batman

Batman
  • 1989
  • US
  • 2h 6min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Tim Burton
  • Written by: Sam Hamm, Warren Skaaren
  • Cast: Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Pat Hingle, Billy Dee Williams, Michael Gough, Jack Palance

Nicholson is on top form: psychotic, witty and zanier than ever, but the real triumph is Keaton's. With less screen time than the Great Upstager, he produces a performance of memorable subtlety and power, which gives credibility to the Bruce Wayne/Batman character, while remaining true to the comic strip. With eerie angular design by Anton Furst, a terrific score by Danny Elfman, a suitably wacky script and a strong supporting cast.

National Theatre Live: The Lehman Trilogy

National Theatre Live: The Lehman Trilogy

by Stefano Massini, adapted by Ben Power directed by Sam Mendes

The story of a family and a company that changed the world, told in three parts on a single evening.

Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall, The Ferryman) directs Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles who play the Lehman Brothers, their sons and grandsons.

On a cold September morning in 1844 a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside. Dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins.

163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, and triggers the largest financial crisis in history.

This critically acclaimed and five-time Olivier Award nominated play features stunning set design from Es Devlin (NT Live: Hamlet) and will be broadcast live from London’s West End as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th Birthday season.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan
  • 1998
  • US
  • 2h 50min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Steven Spielberg
  • Written by: Robert Rodat
  • Cast: Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, Barry Pepper, Tom Sizemore

Like no film in recent memory, 'Saving Private Ryan' focuses its attention squarely on the brutalities endured by American soldiers in World War II. Central to this impact is the already legendary opening half hour, detailing with remorseless brilliance the carnage of the D-Day landings. Understandably enough, Spielberg finds it hard to follow up this bravura introduction. The actual meat of the story, in which Hanks is sent off with the remnants of his unit to locate the eponymous Ryan, is built on rugged rather than subtle lines.
