John Myers: The World is not Beautiful

John Myers' remarkable and yet little known photographs present a nostalgic tableau of life in the suburban West Midlands in the 1970s. His landscapes capture the cul-de-sacs, flats and garage blocks of the housing estates where he grew up while his penetrating portraits present everyday local people in their homes in a fascinating snapshot of '70s taste and fashion. A series of 8 industrial landscapes, never previously exhibited, document the dramatic changes in the built environment following the collapse of British manufacturing in the early '80s. Although his work is thoroughly English in feel, Myers was a contemporary of, and can be favourably compared to, American landscape photographers including Stephen Shore, Lewis Baltz and Robert Adam. His imagery pares landscape back to its most minimal, and offers clear stylistic affinities with the work of Carl Andre, Donald Judd and Sol Le Witt. In addition to the photographs' conceptual purity, Myers' work also represents a remarkable panorama of Britain in the 1970s.
