Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast
  • 2017
  • US
  • 129 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Bill Condon
  • Cast: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Emma Thompson, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Josh Gad

Belle (Watson) is forced to live with a Beast (Stevens) in this live-action retelling of the 1991 blockbuster. Watson is winsome but feisty, Evans as Gaston is splendid of voice and hilariously odious, McGregor brings much joie de vivre to ‘Be Our Guest’, and it’s an enchantingly realised delight.

  • Cast: John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Adria Arjona

One day, the employees of Belko Corp arrive at their Bogotá HQ to find the local staff being turned away; then steel shutters lock them in and they’re forced to battle to the death. A brutal little belter of a trap movie, with plenty of splatter and satire. Horror fans won’t regret it.

  • Directed by: Tom McGrath
  • Written by: Marla Frazee/Michael McCullers
  • Cast: Miles Christopher Bakshi, Alec Baldwin, Tobey Maguire, Steve Buscemi

The Boss Baby (Baldwin) is a tot with the mannerisms of a ruthless corporate tycoon, who upsets seven-year-old Tim (Bakshi). The frantic visual style and crude slapstick overwrite the charm of the original story by Marla Frazee, and there’s not much for audiences to take to their hearts.

Fast & Furious 8

Fast and Furious 8

  • 136 min

  • Directed by: F. Gary Gray
  • Cast: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren

Cyber-terrorist Cypher (Theron) pits rogue racer Dom (Diesel) against his fellow petrolheads, including wife Letty (Rodriguez). Baffling and inconsequential story aside, it’s all shamelessly about car-based action, and although human doorstop Diesel isn’t up to the story’s limited emotional demands, Johnson and Statham make up for it with some grade-A squabbling.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

  • Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Kurt Russell

The gang are back, with a rollicking plot involving stolen batteries and Ego (Russell) who may or may not be the long-lost dad of Peter Quill (Pratt). It’s very CGI-heavy, sometimes tiringly so, but the humour still charms and the finale picks it up after a sluggish second act.

Mikael (Isaac) is a poor Armenian medical student in Constantinople in 1914, who falls in love with the vivacious Ana (Le Bon), except that she’s already carrying on with the dashing American journalist Chris (Bale). Epic, handsomely cast but overcooked historical romance set against the backdrop of the Turkish genocide of Armenians.

Koala impresario Buster Moon (McConaughey) decides to save his ailing theatre with a singing competition. Most of the humour comes from cute critters singing occasionally inappropriate songs; the plot is spread far too thin and there no real surprises, but it ticks the usual boxes.

Smurfette (Lovato) and her friends go on a quest to help her find her place in the village, and the result is a series of chases, a few under-cooked girl-power nods and a lot of sappiness. Undemanding kids might have a good time; adults will have to grin and smurf it.

Their Finest

Their Finest
  • 2016

  • 117 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Lone Scherfig
  • Cast: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy

London, 1940: fledgling screenwriter Catrin Cole (Arterton) joins the Ministry of Information’s Film Division and starts working on a propaganda movie. Scherfig wraps the war in a cosy cloak of nostalgia in a way that dulls moments of high anxiety, and despite a fine ensemble it’s all too muffled and mild-mannered.
