LS Lowry (Spall) is a meek Salford rent collector dominated by his bedridden mother Elizabeth (Redgrave), but his secret passion for painting is about to bring him success. Hesford’s clichéd script feels more like a stage or radio play but Spall and Redgrave manage to bring substance to the bickering; still, it’s glum, downcast and lacking insight.

Scarred for Life - Video Nasty Special

What better way to celebrate Halloween than with an evening dedicated to the golden age of the “Video Nasty”?

Stephen Brother stone and Dave Lawrence, authors of the hit Scarred For Life books, will be joined onstage by Bob Fischer of the Fortean Times to discuss the 1980s tabloid furore surrounding films like Zombie Flesh Eaters and The Evil Dead. And then, afterwards, there’ll be a genuine VHS screening (from an actual cassette!) of Abel Ferrara’s notorious 1979 slasher movie The Driller Killer. Come and help us adjust the tracking… and whatever you do, don’t tell Mary Whitehouse.

The Old Courts

The Old Courts is a 69,000 square foot not-for-profit multi-arts venue which aims to bring innovative art, music, comedy, dance and spoken word to Wigan. It currently houses an art gallery, artist studios, two music venues, a 200 capacity theatre, bars, band practice rooms and cellar cinema with plans to have an art café in the near future. Our building was built in 1887 and retains much of its original charm, including a Victorian courtroom and adjoining prison cells. All ticket, drinks, venue hire, and donation money go back into the project.
