The Other Side of Hope

The Other Side of Hope
  • 2017
  • Finland/Germany
  • 98 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Aki Kaurismäki
  • Cast: Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kousmanen, Ville Virtanen, Kati Outinen

Syrian asylum-seeker Khaled (Haji) meets travelling salesman-turned-restaurateur Wikström (Kuosmanen), and after an awkward start, a beautiful friendship is born. Kaurismaki is back and at the top of his game, with a melancholy, gorgeous-looking, sometimes screamingly funny exploration of the kindness of strangers. How we’ve missed him.

Parent and Baby Screening: 20th Century Women (15)

Annette Bening gives an extraordinary performance in director Mike Mills's Californian coming-of-age tale.

Single mother Dorothea (Benning) enlists two other women to help her raise her teenage son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann). There’s Abbie (Greta Gerwig), her lodger, the photographer who has returned from New York with a new wave haircut and punk cynicism. And there’s Julie (Elle Fanning), Jamie’s childhood best friend, apparently oblivious to the fact that he’s besotted with her. Together, they muddle through helping Jamie on his quest towards adulthood.

Told in scrapbook style, it’s Mike Mills’s ode to the women that raised him, full of late 70s cool.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya
  • 2013
  • Japan
  • 137 min
  • U
  • Directed by: Isao Takahata
  • Cast: Chloë Grace Moretz, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen

Kaguya (voiced by Moretz in the English dub) is magically born to a bamboo cutter (Caan) and his wife (Steenburgen), but she's devastated when he moves to the city so that she can become a princess. Enchanting, admirable fable about the damaging effects of stereotypes; Kaguya's father is not cruel, just terribly misguided.
