Daddy's Home 2

Daddy's Home 2
  • 2017
  • US
  • 1h 40min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Sean Anders
  • Cast: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, John Cena, John Lithgow, Mel Gibson

Dusty (Wahlberg) and Brad (Ferrell) are now best of friends, but have to spend their holidays with their respective fathers (Lithgow and Gibson). A leaden-footed screenplay disgraces and humiliates everyone on screen, celebrating toxic masculinity and portraying women as either shrill party poopers or delinquent femme fatales. Worst film of the year.

Ferdinand

Ferdinand
  • 2017
  • USA
  • Directed by: Carlos Saldanha
  • Written by: Munro Leaf
  • Cast: Kate McKinnon, David Tennant, Bobby Cannavale

Ferdinand (Cena) is a Spanish bull who prefers sniffing flowers to staring down bullfighters; shipped off to a farm, he has to escape both the slaughterhouse and the ring. Amiable animation which, although funny, is too overcrowded and unfocused to be really satisfying.

Justice League

Justice League
  • 2017
  • US
  • 2h 1min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Zack Snyder
  • Cast: Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa

A team of superheroes forms to fight an alien invasion led by chief baddie Steppenwolf (Hinds). As so often, the villain is less interesting than the heroes, being a soulless CGI creation, but Affleck and Gadot are growing into their roles and it’s a lot better than the lumbering Batman vs Superman.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

  • Cast: Michael Caine, Steven Mackintosh, Muppet Performers:, Dave Goelz, Jerry Nelson, Frank Oz, David Rudman, Steve Whitmire

It's Christmas time, and nasty old miser Scrooge (Caine) needs to be taught a lesson by three seasonal ghosts. Colourful version of Dickens' classic tale that will please the kids and keep the adults smiling with its little irreverent spices.

Murder on the Orient Express

Murder on the Orient Express
  • 2017
  • US
  • 1h 54min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Kenneth Branagh
  • Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley

Murder in the dead of night, a carriage of suspects trapped in an avalanche, and the world’s greatest detective is on hand to solve it. Against the odds, Branagh pulls off a stylish, first-class, surprisingly poignant retelling with fluid camerawork and a top cast, and has a fine old time as the arrogant, outrageously moustachioed Poirot.

Paddington 2

Paddington 2
  • 2017
  • UK/France
  • 1h 43min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Paul King
  • Cast: Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Imelda Staunton

Paddington (Whishaw) falls foul of a dastardly scheme to steal the key to a hidden fortune. The sequel to the wildly successful first film is implausibly even better, with spiffing action pieces, seemingly throwaway gags paying rich dividends later, and splendid performances from all, with Grant brilliant as the has-been thespian villain. Joyful stuff.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • 2017
  • US
  • Directed by: Rian Johnson
  • Cast: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran

Rey (Ridley) meets Luke (Hamill) to learn all about the Force. Johnson expands on the casualties-of-war theme, making magnificent, roaring action sequences and leading the viewer through a blood-stained moral labyrinth. Driver returns with a vengeance, Dern is terrific and it hits the sweet spot between nostalgia and gripping storytelling.

Auggie Pullman (Tremblay) has endured over 27 operations to correct his facial abnormalities and is at last going to school, to his parents’ concern. Chbosky manages to pluck your heartstrings without coating the story in sugar, thanks in part to the excellent work of Tremblay, Robert and Wilson.
