Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2
  • 2018
  • US
  • 1h 59min
  • 15
  • Directed by: David Leitch
  • Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, Morena Baccarin

When tragedy splinters Wade Wilson’s own life, it takes a meeting with a mutant kid (Dennison) and vengeful cyborg Cable (Brolin) to renew his sense of purpose. Filthy, ferocious and funny, it surpasses its predecessor by doubling down on the gleeful self-awareness and excess; the whole cast shines, and the climax is surprisingly touching.

The First Purge

The First Purge
  • 2018
  • USA
  • 1h 37min
  • 18
  • Directed by: Gerard McMurray
  • Cast: Marisa Tomei, Melonie Diaz, Y'lan Noe

No-nonsense, incendiary B-movie prequel to the franchise, in which the government tries out the whole ‘purge’ idea for the first time. Noel and Scott Davis are fine leads, and it makes great use of horror tropes and characters to bust racist myths. Unsubtle, but charged and effective.

Hereditary

  • Directed by: Ari Aster
  • Cast: Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro

Annie (Collette) is an artist who crafts a dollhouse depicting the traumas of her life, but then her family begins to feel they’re being haunted by her late mother. Unnervingly oppressive debut from Aster, exploring maternal guilt and family anxiety. Collette has one of her best roles in years.

The Incredibles 2

  • 2018
  • US
  • 2h 5min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Brad Bird
  • Cast: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Bob Odenkirk

In this sequel to the 2004 original, Supers are still forbidden but Elastigirl (Hunter) gets to go up against a supervillain while husband Bob (Nelson) minds the kids. It looks great and the voice cast is excellent, but it feels dated and the set-pieces become tiring.

  • Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, B. D. Wong, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall

Raptor wrangler Owen (Pratt) and his ex, Claire (Howard) return to Isla Nublar to rescue the dinosaurs from an impending volcanic eruption. Lots of ideas and some earnest lessons about conservation can’t hide that the franchise is running out of oomph, but it’s still fun.

Ocean's 8

  • 1h 50min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Gary Ross
  • Cast: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter

Debbie Ocean (Bullock) sets in motion a plan to swipe a precious diamond necklace, and with pal Lou (Blanchett) puts together a gang of female crooks. The performances are great fun but Ross’s anonymous direction doesn’t add much, and it’s a bit let down by a needless subplot and unnecessary cameos.

Patrick

Patrick

  • PG
  • Directed by: Mandie Fletcher
  • Cast: Beattie Edmondson, Ed Skrein, Jennifer Saunders

Sarah (Edmondson) inherits a pug, Patrick, from her grandmother, and the trouble-making little scamp turns her life upside down. How much you enjoy it is directly proportional to your tolerance of canine reaction shots, but it’s so relentlessly light and breezy that it wins you over even if if it never actually makes you laugh.

The Secret of Marrowbone
  • 2018
  • Spain
  • 1h 50min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Sergio G Sánchez
  • Cast: George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton

Jack (MacKay) cares for his siblings and ailing mother; when his mother dies, he and local librarian Allie (Taylor-Joy) try to protect the family by creating the illusion that she’s still alive. A wealth of detail in this haunted house story makes up for a lack of scares, and it’s a sober, well-constructed riff on genre tropes.

Sicario 2: Soldado

Sicario 2: Soldado
  • 2018
  • US/Italy
  • 15
  • Directed by: Stefano Sollima
  • Cast: Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Isabela Moner

Federal agent Graver (Brolin) brings his operative Alejandro (Del Toro) back into the fold as the operation shifts from drug-smuggling to human trafficking. This world-weary sequel has the authenticity of the first film but is more predictable, and it never really convinces us to care about the issues it prioritises.

Skyscraper

Skyscraper
  • 2018

  • 12A
  • Directed by: Rawson Marshall Thurber
  • Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Pablo Schreiber, Neve Campbell

Will (Johnson) is an FBI veteran who lost a leg, married his nurse (Campbell) and is a safety assessor for the tallest building in the world—which is then attacked by terrorists. With inane dialogue, substandard Euro-villains and preposterous set-pieces, it takes on two classic predecessors (Die Hard and The Towering Inferno) and loses.

  • Directed by: Jeff Tomsic
  • Cast: Jeremy Renner, Annabelle Wallis, Isla Fisher

Five friends (Hamm, Helms, Johnson, Buress, Renner) compete every year in a bruising game of tag, begun three decades earlier. Fitfully amusing, but neither grounded enough to be affecting nor ludicrous enough to be genuinely funny, it mostly takes off when Fisher has the spotlight.
