Alice (Hunt) is a Blackpool teenager struggling to escape from the shadow of her mentally ill mother Gina (Smith). Debut director English fails to hit a consistent tone, and although Smith gives a charismatic performance and Brand (adapting her own novel) clearly knows what she’s talking about, it’s ultimately a bit of disappointment.
