Director Mann uses and abuses the Hollywood star system in this run-of-the-mill thriller that milks every thriller cliché in the cowshed. LA taxi driver Max (Foxx) picks up Annie (Smith), a US attorney, as his first ride of the evening. They shoot the breeze and at the end of the ride, she disappears into the night. Enter Cruise as hitman Vincent. When the first job goes wrong Max becomes Vincent's unwilling sidekick. So far, so ordinary, then the plot goes downhill. Mann however uses Cruise's iconic status (surely he can't die?) to maintain audience interest until the bitter end.
