Widows (2018, UK/USA, Steve McQueen, 2hr 10 mins, 15) is a thriller set in contemporary Chicago about the aftermath of a botched armed robbery where the grieving wives of the gang have to pick up the pieces of their lives having been unaware of their deceased husbands dealings. Veronica (Viola Davis), widow of the gang leader, finds herself threatened with violence by a corrupt politician who is owed two million dollars. Equipped with a notebook detailing her husbands past and future plans, Veronica teams up with the other widows to execute a robbery to clear their debts and give them a new start. Based on Lynda La Plantes UK TV crime drama from the 1980s and featuring a superb ensemble cast, Daviss astonishing performance is BAFTA nominated and is at the centre of the action.
