Winner of the Queer Lion at Venice, Li Cheng’s José is a sensitive, tenderly felt portrait of desire and longing set in Guatemala. 19 year-old José (Enrique Salanic) lives with his devoted mother in a small apartment. They eke out a living as best they can. José covers his true desires with little white lies as he goes looking for a partner. When he meets construction worker Luis (Monolo Herrera), a physical attraction blossoms into an emotional attachment. Can José ever take a chance on love when family ties and a suffocating macho culture seem so set against him?
