The Favourite (2018, Ireland/UK/USA, Yorgos Lanthimos, 1hr 57 mins, 15)is set during the reign of Queen Anne in the early 18th Century. The monarch has become unravelled by the tragic loss of 17 children to miscarriage, stillbirth and early death at a time when political turmoil was evident over the Spanish War of Succession. The Queen, brilliantly portrayed byOlivia Colmanin Oscar and BAFTA winning form, relies heavily on close confidanteSarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz)for advice and emotional support. Their partnership is disturbed by the arrival of Sarahs cousinAbigail Masham (Emma Stone)fallen on hard times and seeking to advance her social status by winning the Queen over. The film is not a typical costume drama, focussing on the power struggle between Sarah and Abigail for the attentions of the Queen, this is a dark comedy that depicts the period as a debauched world shot through with a rich vein of humour. Come along for hilarity and to judge for yourself if the multiple awards for acting and costume design are deserved.View the Trailer herePlease Note: This film is in the Performance Hall at 7.45pm - there is another film on the same night at 7.30pm in Studio 609.
