Bernadine (Woodard) is a dedicated prison warden who oversees death row inmates in a facility housing mostly African-American men, but whose faith in the justice system is increasingly strained. Chukwu’s sensitive screenplay is excellently served by Woodard, who’s mesmerising as the quietly tormented Bernadine, herself a prisoner of the system she serves.
