Mary Poppins Returns
MARY POPPINS RETURNS (2018, USA/UK, Rob Marshall, 2hrs 7 mins, U) is a musical drama about the very English nanny who, as the title suggests, must revisit 17, Cherry Tree Lane to help the Banks family. Michael Banks (Ben Wishaw) is now a middle-aged father of three who has recently lost his wife and is now in danger of losing the house as he has taken out a loan he is not able to pay back. With practically perfect timing, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to whip both generations of Bankses into shape. The film is set between the wars during the great slump, with the lovely London sky shown to evocative effect during a wonderful pre-credit sequence featuring lovable lamplighter Jack (played by Hamilton Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda) travelling through the city. Part sequel and part loving homage to the 1964 classic, the film brings its own take to familiar themes; Blunt gives her own interpretation of Marys character, a little sharper, posher and stricter than the Julie Andrews original, Miranda brings dazzle and showmanship to the superb musical set-pieces that both update and pay tribute to their predecessors. The fantastic new songs, written by Hairspray duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman, exhibit all the infectious breeziness and soaring orchestration of the Sherman brothers originals. Look out for some familiar faces making cameo appearances towards the end of the movie.Expect lots of great nostalgia for the original and to be humming the songs for days after - so Trip a Little Light Fantastic down to Filmbox and start your Christmas off on a high!
