Based on a Becker script, this film traces a Polish family from its beginnings in a thriving pre-war Jewish community, through Auschwitz, to a desolate Displaced Persons camp. It was the first feature film to depict the Holocaust from a Jewish standpoint and significantly climaxes with the emergence of a hope for rebirth and renewal in Israel.
