Idrish is a new half hour film by artist Adam Lewis Jacob which has evolved through a collaboration with Birmingham based veteran anti-deportation activist Muhammad Idrish, filmed and developed in both Bangladesh and the UK. Idrish follows on from the 2019 work People Meeting In A Room, co-commissioned by Vivid Projects and Animate, and draws from both Vivid Projects’ rich archival sources alongside location filming in Bangladesh, public sources and Idrish’s personal archive. Lewis Jacob deploys a range of visual strategies from animation, to archive film, stills and evocative original soundscapes. The work reflects on the life of activist Muhammad Idrish, embedding a personal history and journey from Bangladesh to the UK within a broader consideration of rights, freedom and civil liberties. Repressed historical moments and over-looked gestures from the archive are given new attention; the work uses theories of feedback, echo and cyclical cultural and political ideologies. Moments in history appear and reappear.
