Filmmaker and actress Emmanuelle Bercot’s season-spanning De son vivant shot nearly two years ago, made headlines when star Catherine Deneuve suffered a stroke literally mid-shot.

Luckily, that scene was taking place at a hospital outside Paris, so the French icon was swiftly given medical care. De son vivant itself revolves around a medical crisis, namely that Deneuve’s character’s son (played by Benoît Magimel) has been diagnosed with cancer. The film then charts the currents unfolding between them, and their doctor (real life oncologist Gabriel Sara) and nurse (Cécile de France) across a single year.
