When cellist Daigo (Motoki) is made redundant after his orchestra is disbanded he finds work as assistant to Sasaki (Yamazaki), preparing bodies for funeral rituals. With little trace of his unsavoury background as a porn director, Takita's sombre compositions, skilful use of a lush score by Joe Hisaishi and mordant humour lend a grim subject a spiky wit, warmth and empathy. Winner of the 2009 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
