The first fictional feature of Kazakh documentary-maker Dvortsevoy, centres upon 22-year-old sheepherder Asa (Kunchinchirekov). Having recently returned to southern Kazakhstan after completing his national service in the Russian navy, he must marry to fulfill his dreams of one day owning his own flock. But Tulpan, the only eligible young woman around for miles, wants to study in a big city. One of 2009's most unexpected cinematic treats.
