The former enfant terrible of Japanese cinema surprises again with a tale inspired by samurai mythology. Having set the 19th-century scene and taken time to build up the characters, Miike closes the film with a giddy and gratuitous fight sequence that lasts for the whole final 40 minutes of the film.
