Shot on the cheap in 23 days for the B-picture studio Republic Pictures, it's hardly any surprise that this comes over as one of Welles' least successful enterprises. Largely spoken in an unintelligible, bastard form of mangled Shakespearean Scots, one can however sense the attempt to create a shadowy, wholly cinematic space for the drama to operate in.
