A grouchy old artist sets out to paint the quince tree in his garden and a couple of his mates come round. Sounds pretty deadly, but the viewer soon finds watching the artist at work utterly compelling, to the extent that the tiniest event becomes a crucial incident. A majestic film experience. Or the Emperor's new clothes syndrome.
