Kelly Macdonald takes on her first leading role after 'Trainspotting', and proves to be the film's driving force. As one of a group of school-age prostitutes working in London, fuelling themselves with drugs and fantasies to keep the harshness of their situation at bay, she colours her character's toughness with just enough loneliness and fragility. AL Kennedy's screenplay voices the despair of a generation.
