David Charleston, a cynical and ambitious newspaper journalist in the late 1930s, attempts to alert Britain to the dangerous political climate brewing in the rest of Europe. When he is repeatedly censored by the newspaper's editor, David travels across the Atlantic where he takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on Lake Michigan, but his self-imposed seclusion leads to supernatural visions of all those who have drowned on the lake's shores.
