Considered to be the first film of the French New Wave, Agnes Varda’s black and white masterpiece is a must see for all cineastes. Set near the Mediterranean city of Sete, the film follows two storylines: on the one hand the struggles of a young Parisian couple who visit the husband’s homeland and on the other hand a documentary-style depiction of local life, including fishermen who struggling with licensing administration. This beautiful film set the tone for a generation of French filmmakers, including the likes of Jean-Luc Godart, Claude Chabrol and Francois Truffaut.
