Film adaptation of the play of the same name by Peter Weiss. Set in the Asylum of Charenton, notorious inmate The Marquis de Sade, convinces the director of the hospital to let him direct a play based on the assassination of Marat; at his disposition are all the inmates. The further the play progresses, the more the violent tone of the play takes hold of the mental patients, until the supervising nuns no longer can control them.
